South Australians are being urged to report illegal tobacco and vape sales, as part of a new push to tackle the growing problem.

With Consumer and Business Services (CBS) formally taking over the licensing and enforcement of tobacco and vape sales from today, the consumer watchdog has asked for public help in identifying dodgy dealers.

“While it’s still early days, we are committed to making a difference in this field,” Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Martyn Campbell said.

“Getting the public involved – by reporting suspected illegal operations – will be essential, both in terms of raising awareness of the risks of purchasing these products as well as gathering vital intelligence to help guide our work.”

The Government has invested $16 million over four years in additional resources for CBS, with recruitment now underway for additional staff to boost its licensing and enforcement capability.

CBS is currently assessing intelligence from a range of sources, and is encouraging consumers to report suspected illicit or unlicensed tobacco and vape sales can report online at www.cbs.sa.gov.au/tobacco.
